My Approach

Heidi Gibb - Child Therpist in Bath

I specialise in working with children and teenagers using a cognitive form of therapy called NLP to help them learn how to control their thoughts, emotions, and behaviour.

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. "Neuro" relates to what is happening in our minds, and "Linguistic" refers to the words we use in communication with ourselves and others. "Programming" describes persistent patterns of behaviour that we learn and repeat.

Informal NLP Therapy Sessions for Children and Teens

My therapy sessions use a friendly and informal form of talk therapy so that I can build rapport and learn about the young person and their specific needs. I teach them practical, safe and effective NLP techniques and strategies tailored to their individual situation. They are specially adapted for kids and teens to be fun, safe and easy for young people to use. This gives them the skills they need to think in new ways so that they feel in control and learn to overcome the challenges they face.

My methods are:

Safe
My sessions are practised in a safe environment, going at the child’s pace and do not utilise techniques that activate past trauma or force the child to do anything uncomfortable. I communicate with the parent about how the child is doing without revealing any shared confidential information and give pointers on how the child can be supported at home where appropriate. I provide a safe place for both the child and parent to express themselves.

Practical
I give easy practical tools with clear directions that your child can use right away to start making changes. There are no demanding ‘homework’ tasks or complicated protocols to follow.

Accessible
NLP is suitable for all; you don’t need special equipment, knowledge, or technology to do it. Because it can achieve results in just a few sessions, it is often more cost-effective and affordable than traditional therapy or a course of CBT.

Clear
I will be as clear as possible in my explanations. NLP uses many techniques to achieve different things, which sometimes can feel mysterious and complicated. I want my clients to understand how they can be helped in the most straightforward way possible.

Empowering
The purpose is to give your child tools they can use for the rest of their life. One would not become dependent in the way some people do with traditional psychotherapy. Once we find the right strategies, they’ll be able to use them whenever needed.

Gentle
NLP is sometimes known as a personal development approach embraced by business coaches to get the ‘best results’ for clients who want to ‘achieve more success’ in their careers. NLP for children is very different as it’s about improving their emotional and mental well-being, not pushing them to ‘succeed’ or ‘achieve more’. We use a very gentle child-led approach. I promise not to judge and understand everyone needs to work at their own pace.
